Transportation Policy

School Transportation

Schedules for busing are sent to the home at the end of August.  Schedules are also available from the office.  Afternoon buses leave school at 2:20 p.m.  Children should be at the bus stop at least 10 minutes early for the morning pickup.  Please be sure your child is using the stop assigned by the Transportation Department.

If you move to a new address and need a change in your bus stop, please let the transportation coordinator know as far ahead of the move as possible so they can request a stop for your student.  Please call us at 612-668-2930 to request a new bus stop or if there are scheduling problems such as the bus arriving too early or too late.

Bus rules are required to protect the safety of all students.  A Bus Behavior Letter is sent home with all students at the beginning of the school year.  Please go over the safe conduct rules with your child.  If your child is having problems on the bus, talk to the driver or the school.  Children who ride the bus are expected to show good behavior by being respectful, quiet, and following instructions from the driver.  Bus drivers provide the principal with a Student Bus Conduct Report when a student does not follow the bus rules.

  • 1st Report - Conference with the student.  Parent contact.  Positive bus behavior plan.
  • 2nd Report – Conference with student.  One day suspension.  Parent contact.
  • 3rd Report – Conference with student, parent, and safety manager.
  • 4th Report – Conference with student, parent, bus driver and safety supervisor.  Suspension from all school buses for 10 days.  Parent provides transportation.
  • 5th Report – Suspension from all school bus service for the remainder of the year.  Suspension from bus privileges does not mean the students are excused from school; they will be counted as unexcused absences.

The citywide discipline policy applies to bus and bus stop behavior.

We make every effort to find convenient routes and stops for our children.  If you move, please give us at least one week to set up a new bus stop for your child.  If you have questions regarding buses call Transportation, at (612)668-2300 or Nellie Stone Johnson at (612)668-2930.

Children may have school friends ride home with them.  Such “guests” must provide written parental consent to the teacher and be approved by the principal prior to riding the bus.

Pull into one of our parking lots to pickup or drop off children.  Children must not cross streets in the middle of the block.  Send a note to the teacher if you or someone else is picking up your child.  Students will not be released to go home with anyone without written authorization from a parent or guardian.  A parent or guardian will be required to show a photo identification before a child is released into their custody.

Bus Safety

To ensure a safe and pleasant bus ride for all, students are expected to follow these rules:

  1. Sit in the seat and stay there for the duration of the ride.
  2. Keep hands, feet and all personal belongings to self.
  3. Talk quietly and use no abusive or foul language.
  4. Leave the safety equipment alone unless there is an emergency.
  5. Follow the bus driver’s instructions.

Any behavior on the bus which threatens the safety of others will result in an automatic 3-day suspension from riding the bus.

PARENTS:  If you are aware of a problem on your child’s bus, please contact the Transportation Office, 612-668-2300, or the school.

The Legislature has directed that seven areas of school bus safety training be provided to all students (K-12) in the first full week of school.  Age appropriate curricula has been prepared by Transportation Safety for use within our school.  These seven mandated safety subjects are:

  1. Transportation by school bus is a priviledge, not a right.
  2. District policies for student conduct and school bus safety.
  3. Appropriate conduct while on the bus.
  4. DANGER ZONES surrounding a bus.
  5. Procedures for safety boarding and exiting a school bus.
  6. Procedures for the safe crossing of vehicle lanes.
  7. School bus evacuations and other emergency procedures.
