In second grade art the students focus on learning these principals in art:

Shape Monsters

In this lesson second grade students read the book Where the Wild Things Are, then they created their own monsters.  The students used four or more geometric shapes to create their scary monsters.

 

Minnesota State Standard: 0.1.1.5.1 Identify the elements of visual art including color, line, shape, texture, and space.

Clause Oldenburg Ice Cream

In this lesson, second grade students studied the art by Clause Oldenburg.  The students used paint to create their large ice cream cones.  Second graders also learned about tints and shades in painting.

Japanese Carp Windsocks

In this lesson, second graders used all seven different lines to create Japanese Carp Windsocks.  The students learned the history of the windsocks and when you’ll see them on display in Japan.

 

Minnesota State Standard: 0.1.2.5.1 Identify the tools, materials and techniques from a variety of two- and three-dimensional media such as drawing, printmaking, ceramics or sculpture. 

Line Sculptures

In this lesson, second grade students focus on the seven different lines to create their sculpture.  The students use: straight line, thin line, thick line, curved line, wavy line, zigzag line, and spiral lines.  Often the students end up turning their sculptures into theme parks.

Second Grade Art

This year in art class the second graders will learn the principles and elements of art.  

The year began with learning the seven different types of line.  Each student created a line sculpture using: straight lines, thin lines, thick lines, curved lines, wavy line, zigzag lines, and spiral lines.
