NSJ Chess Team to Compete in National Tournament

NSJ's Chess team will be on their way to compete in the National Chess Tournament.  The NSJ Chess team will be competing in the National Elementary Chess Championships in Nashville, Tennessee May 10th- May 14th.  The team has been working hard all year to prepare for this tournament and they have played their best chess in their last two tournaments.  We know they will represent NSJ well and continue the tradition of bringing home a trophy.  We wish them the very best!

"Seven boys from Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary School are being groomed for the state chess tournament in St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday. After that, it's only six weeks until the national tournament in Nashville. Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant

NSJ is proud to announce that we are one of the 7 MPS schools awarded a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Beginning April 19, 2012 a fresh fruit or vegetable snack will be provided each school day for all students in our school. Snacks will be eaten in the classroom and children will be encouraged to try the fruit or vegetable.  Read more...

2012-13 calendar

The Minneapolis Board of Education approved the 2012-2013 school year calendar, which includes four additional days of instruction for all students. The school year will begin for students on August 27, 2012 and end on June 4, 2013. Kindergarten students will begin on August 29, 2012. Learn more.

Ever heard of a walking school bus?

Quite simply a walking bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. Several schools in MPS have walking buses - and they often start in the bus zone. Parents, grandparents and children like them - they provide fun, exervise, safety and community.
